Former head of state, General Ibrahim Babangida yesterday made a call for Nigerians to embrace the Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the 2019 general election because he trusts the people at the hem of power in the party. Although he did not state who the presidential candidate of the party is, don’t you think his recommendation is beyond mere advisory words?
Following Olusegun Obasanjo’s open letter to Buhari early this year, Babangida as well made an open statement to Buhari last month and it was centered on the end of Buhari’s government and the need for a younger leader. Hence, with his recommendation of a new party and his constant emphasis on the need for a younger leader, don’t you suspect an indirect effort to influence government from the passive side?
Nobody is oblivious of the fact that Obasanjo has established the political movement he recommended in his open letter to Buhari, with his possible presidential candidate Donald Duke spear heading the affairs of the movement. Examining Babangida’s similar moves as well, should we expect a candidate from the former military head of state?
It might interest you to know that Babangida, aka IBB got nicknamed “Maradona” during his time as head of state because his dubious wealth acquisition acts that could be likened to the dribbling skills of Diego Maradonna. Coming back in 2019, under the pretext of a younger candidate, what could be store for Nigerians, a Lionel Messi?
