Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr has finally ruled out the possibility of including Lille goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama on his 23-man squad for the 2018 World Cup.
There had been speculations the German coach would turn to the veteran goalkeeper following the unavailability of former no 1 Carl Ikeme through illness.
But Rohr has made clear the former Enyimba goalkeeper would not be on the plane to Russia, pointing to a lack of game time for Lille.
“He is not playing anywhere, so we cannot take players who are not playing,” Rohr said.
“We are working hard to have the best of our legs taken to Russia and we don’t have the luxury of naming a player that has not been playing in recent time.
“Each time we have a problem, there is always a good answer and I hope it will be the same for the World Cup.
“We currently have so many players in camp and we want to continue monitoring them. The most important thing is for them to be in best shape for the Mundial.”
Enyeama last played for the Eagles in 2015, before his shocking retirement after a falling out with former coach Sunday Oliseh. So those hoping to see the famous Messi versus Enyeama contest should maybe forget that now. But will this decision affect the performance of the super eagles in any way?
