Inspector General of Police and his battle with his speech: a permissible error or an avoidable disgrace?
A video of the inspector-general of police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris struggling to read a speech at an event is trending online and lots of impressions have followed the appalling sight. For one saddled with the responsibility of handling police security nationwide, would you regard this as merely a mistake?
It is important to note that the job of the Inspector General of Police is not just in the uniform but requires a level of qualification as well. Serving under a government accused of nepotism, should we have any reason to doubt the qualification of the number one police officer in Nigeria?
Interestingly, some reactions have come from the IGP’s side claiming the video was doctored but how does that claim account for the man in suit who came to rescue the embattled Inspector General of Police while giving the speech? With what seems like a speech he knew nothing about, the Inspector General has sure made it open to the public that he hardly has knowledge about witting a speech. Indeed so much for the national head of the police force; can this show of incapability be a possible explanation for poor performance in the police force?
You would recall that the same Inspector General of police recently ignored an invitation to a senate inquiry and he was tagged irresponsible and unworthy of his office. Indeed, there is no denial that the singular act of disobedience has set a wrong example for the junior officers to follow. Hence in a bid to curb the trend of unruly and badly behaved policemen would it be out of place to start from the head?
